FAQs

How are the final 20 finalists and the scholarship winners chosen? What are the criteria?

All entries will be judged according to the following criteria: Innovation, Creativity, Feasibility and Uniqueness. The Judging Panel will rate each entrant on a scale of 1 to 10 for each element of Criteria. Each Criteria element will be weighted equally. The entrant’s scores will be averaged, and the highest scores will be selected. In the event of a tie, the Judging Panel, in its sole discretion, shall make a determination as to the entry that shall be selected.

What role do BHiveLab and the sponsors play in this contest?

BHiveLab is the primary organizer of the contest and will provide some of the funding for the development kits and scholarship dollars. BHiveLab has partnered with several sponsors to help underwrite and promote this contest. In addition, BHiveLab is providing 1 day of training to the 20 finalists.

Is my age a factor in your selection process?

Yes, entrants must be between fourteen (14) and nineteen (19) years of age at the time of entry.

Do I need to transportation, and where do I need to go?

Selected finalists will need to make their own arrangements and pay for their own transportation to two events:

  1. Training Session on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the TechShop located at 192 Bakery Square Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15206, and
  2. Concept Presentation on either December 7th or 8th, 2013 at Sponsor’s offices located at 11 Stanwix St., 5th Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

When is the deadline to apply and what’s the overall timeline?

The Contest begins on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) and ends on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. ET
Judging Panel will select finalists by October 25, 2013
Training session will be conducted on November 2, 2013
Final presentations on December 7 and 8, 2013
Winner’s selected by December 20, 2013

How does the application process work?

Get permission from your parent or legal guardian to participate in the Contest.

Visit hackerchallenge.bhivelab.com and click on the “Submit Your Idea” button. Complete the two part entry form in full with all required information which includes your full name, age, street address, city, state, zip code, email address, and parent or legal guardian’s email address along with your acceptance of and agreement to comply with the Official Rules. The information you provide will only be used in accordance with Sponsor’s privacy policy.

How detailed does my idea need to be in the application?

In this initial application process, we ask applicants to describe what makes the idea innovative, unique and how they might execute the idea. We are not looking for business plans, but are looking for creative thinkers.

Who will be invited to the final presentation day?

A mix of BHiveLab and sponsor personnel will be there, and potentially members of the press.

Will BHiveLab invest in my idea?

There is no guarantee that BHiveLab will invest or support any of the ideas that are presented, including the winners. If there is interest, that would be handled as a separate agreement outside of this contest.

Does BHiveLab retain the intellectual property (IP) developed during the Hacker Challenge?

BHiveLab will not and does not claim ownership to the IP developed by the entrant in connection with his/her entry in the contest.

Is a contest entrant or finalist guaranteed to be distributed by BHiveLab?

No, there are no guarantees. Finalists in the contest will gain technical training from industry experts and an opportunity to network with industry professionals. The goal of the Hacker Challenge is to raise awareness that there are great technology careers in the advertising industry and to provide an opportunity for some to bring their ideas to life.
